In an effort to keep the Davidson Academy family up-to-date on the exciting developments in our strategic plan, we are issuing periodic progress reports. This is the second of many updates to come regarding our campus move to Sumner County.

Attending the closing on the property in Hendersonville were (seated, left to right) Steve Hale, Bloma Hale and Dr. Bill Chaney; and (standing, left to right) David Hale, Randy Toney and Duane Wray.

Site Acquisition and Approvals

• On Monday, Sept. 25, Davidson Academy closed on the 76-acre Dr. and Mrs. James Hale farm in Hendersonville. The new Davidson Academy campus will be located on Stop 30 Road near the Vietnam Veterans Boulevard/Indian Lake Boulevard interchange, approximately seven miles from the Davidson County line.

• At its Sept. 26 meeting, the City of Hendersonville's Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a resolution waiving nearly $200,000 in building permit and plans review fees for the new campus construction. As part of the incentive package from the city, Davidson Academy has pledged to contribute up to $100,000 toward road improvements required by our development.

Financing

• Davidson Academy has completed an arrangement with Capital Bank & Trust to provide financing required to purchase the Hendersonville property, complete the civil engineering and master plan, and design the new school's facilities. As the project progresses, funding from three sources — the sale of the current campus, a capital campaign, and a tax-exempt bond issue — will complete the construction.

Engineer and Architect Selected

• Littlejohn Engineering Associates has been chosen as the civil engineer and master planner for the new campus. This firm has also been involved with site development projects such as Pope John Paul II High School in Hendersonville, the Vanderbilt Student Life Center, Franklin Road Academy and Brentwood Academy.

• Veteran architectural firm Earl Swensson Associates will design the new campus. Wendell Brown, AIA, a 16-year veteran of the company and expert in education-related construction, has been named the project manager.

Both firms bring extensive campus design experience to our project. A contractor is expected to be named in the next few weeks.

• Educational and planning consultant Dr. Jack Owenby has been working with faculty, staff and trustees to compile the educational specifications for the new campus. Information such as space needed for certain tasks, their size and descriptions, and their relationships to one another are very important to the architects and engineers as they design the new Davidson Academy.

• Site work, utility construction, and possibly preliminary work on the athletic fields may begin as early as this winter, with major excavation set for early next spring. According to the timeline approved by the Board of Trustees, classes could be held on the new campus by the 2008-09 school year.

Sale of Old Hickory Boulevard Campus

• Several organizations have expressed interest in purchasing Davidson Academy's current 65-acre campus. Discussions with prospective buyers are ongoing.
