December 13, 2009 - Beverly Blomquist was chosen as the
Titans Tennessee Teacher of the Week as
announced on the Titans Radio Network on
Sunday, December 13. Davidson Academy
will receive $400 for her recognition. Mrs.
Blomquist wishes to spend her winnings on Science Department
supplies. The weekly recognition is
sponsored by American Paper and Twine and the Titans

December 2009 - Drew Jordan, a sophomore at Centre College in Danville,
Kentucky, recently received 2nd place in the “Flo Gault Student
Poetry Competition.” The competition is sponsored by
Sarabande Books, a leading publisher in the field of poetry.
Drew, along with his poem entitled “Waking Up,” will be recognized
at a party on January 30, 2010, in Louisville, Kentucky.
He will also receive a $200 cash prize. Drew is a DA graduate,
class of 2008, was Poet Laureate in 2008, and is the son of kindergarten teacher, Paula
Jordan, and her husband, Jaime. |

On December 12, 2009 hundreds of students auditioned for the Junior High (7-9 grade) Midstate Honor Bands. Three of our students were chosen for the three bands at midstate. Lee Rice (9th grade) received second chair percussionist in the gold band. Justin Kilmarx (9th grade) received fourth chair percussionist in the silver band. Amirah Tayyun (8th grade) received seventh chair clarinet in the 7th and 8th grade band. The students will spend a weekend rehearsing and will put on a performance with their honor band on January 7-8, 2010 in Murfreesboro. Times are to be announced. |

December 2, 2009 - Geography Bee Winners -
Congratulations to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of DA’s
school-level National Geographic Bee: Matthew Hardee,
Jacob Whitman, and Sterling Bishir. Students answered
questions relating to geography, climate, cities, and cultures
all around the world. DAA provided a $25 Best Buy gift card
to our 1st place winner and $10 movie gift cards for 2nd &
3rd place winners. Matthew Hardee will continue preparing
to take a written test in January to qualify for competition
in April’s state bee along with up to 100 of the top scorers
across the state. |

November 10, 2009 - Tri-M Music Honor Society Induction Ceremony held in the Band Room on November 10, 2009 at 7:00pm. The following students were inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society: Kristen Clay, Morgan Elmore, Montie House, Jimmy Killian, Justin Kilmarx, Daniel Mena, Lee Rice, Erin Wood. Officers were also installed: Kristen Clay, President, Erin Wood, Vice President, Morgan Elmore, Secretary, and Montie House, Historian. Members at this ceremony carried out their last task of performance before becoming inducted into the society. Tri-M stands for Modern Music Masters. A member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society is one who sets a good example, is always willing to assist those students who are striving to better themselves in the music department, and always remembers that real honor bring responsibility. Tri-M’s purpose is to serve others and raise awareness of music in schools, music education, and our school’s music department.

November 7, 2009 - Congratulations to Matthew Roberts for making 3rd place Field Commander in the state!! He was only one point away from first! Excellent job Matthew!! In the Division I State Championship the band beat 8 other bands, the colorguard beat 8 other colorguards, and the drumline beat 16 other drumlines! Congratulations on the end of a fantastic season!

October 30, 2009 Davidson Academy was privileged to host a group
of school administrators from the Republic of China. The
group included principals of elementary,
middle, and high schools; central office persons; and
three interpreters/translators. Their local liaison is Mr. Tom
Ward of Peabody/Vanderbilt, formerly principal of Hume-Fogg

from the money collected for the orphans in Uganda is:

Mrs. Rust’s Third grade class is corresponding with an internationally known rainforest biologist, Dr. Meg Lowman. She is the author of several books and has been delightful with the children. One of the third graders has been so impressed that she is choosing to portray Dr. Lowman at the annual biography presentations on the day of our Thanksgiving luncheon. |

Davidson Academy Students
Receive AP Scholar Awards - At Davidson Academy 5 students qualified for the AP Scholar
with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least
3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five
or more of these exams. These students are Reid Cimala,
Daniel Kidd, Seth Latture, Ben Price, and Christina Walker
– all from the class of 2009.
Two students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award
by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams
taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these
exams. These students are Jenna Pemberton (’09) and
Matthew Roberts (’10).
Seven students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing
three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher. The
AP Scholars are Alex Crabtree (’09), Whitfield Hamilton
(’10), Katie Hogan (’09), Matthew Hogan (’09), Tiffanie
Melton (’10), Betsy Swann (’10), and Hannah Warner (’09).

October 2009 - Recent competitions the DA Marching Band has won are:
Pulaski Classic on October 3 = 2nd place Band, 2nd place percussion, 2nd place field commander, 2nd place colorguard.
Small Band Championships on October 10 = 3rd place band, 3rd place percussion, 2nd place field commander.
Westmoreland Highland Rim Competition on October 24 = 3rd place band, 2nd place colorguard, 1st place field commander

 | April 15, 2009 - Congratulations to Senior Holly Beth Jones for being selected as a finalist for the Moss-Oliver Award. The Moss-Oliver award is presented by the Nashville City Civitan Club for seniors who excel in the sport of basketball, academic achievement, leadership and community service. Holly Beth was honored by the Civitan Club at a luncheon on Wednesday, April 15th. Holly Beth is the daughter of Marilee Jones and Tim and Paula Jones. Congratulations to Holly Beth and her Varsity Basketball teammates for all of their accomplishments this season. |

February 2009 - Kelsey Gilbert has signed a soccer scholarship with Union University. Kelsey helped lead her team to a Region championship and a trip to the State tournament this season. February 2009 - Trey Dill, 4th grader from Mrs. Chason’s room, won best goalie in the “Ace Bailey Got Skills” competition held on January 7th at the Sportsplex. He is a goalie for the Nashville Ice Tigers, Squirt A. This win qualifi es him to compete in the national championship to be held in Chicago. He will compete against other goalies from across the US. January 23, 2009 - Congratulations to Senior Holly Beth Jones for scoring her 1,000th point On January 6th at Webb. Holly Beth was honored on January 23rd during our Coming Home celebration for this great accomplishment. Several members of the Lady Bear Basketball 1,000 point club were on hand to welcome Holly Beth into this prestigious group of players. They included former players, Amy Hutchins, Ashley Boykin and Raven Teeples. These young ladies were former standouts for the Lady Bears and each continued their careers in college by earning full basketball scholarships. January 24, 2009 - Senior Matthew Brady, the Poet Laureate of Davidson Academy for this
school year, was one of the featured student readers at the Young Writers
Symposium in Memphis recently. Matthew read two poems of his own
composition and received a very warm response from the nearly three hundred
students, faculty, and professional writers in attendance. Matthew is the son
of Danny and Marilyn Brady. |

January 21, 2009 - Senior Nathan Stewart is one of the recipients of this year’ ashville Civitan Walter Nipper Award. The awards, named for the late owner of Nashville Sporting Goods, were presented to members of region
champion football teams in the Nashville area. Voted this year’s team captain, Nathan helped our football team win the DII-A state championship.He is the son of Gary and Cathy Stewart. |
