Dear Friends,
It is time to begin planning our February Mission Trip to Matamoros , Mexico . We will once again be partnering with Jesus Is the Only Way Ministries and missionaries David and Martha Garza from Harlingen, Texas. While in Mexico, we will be teaching Bible School, conducting sports clinics, distributing food and clothing, hosting medical clinics, painting the church we built in the dump, hosting a fiesta in both the farming village La Gloria and at Abraham's Island in the Gulf of Mexico, and leading in worship. This will be the 13 th mission trip that Davidson Academy has made to Matamoros since May of 2001.
We are much later in our preparations for this trip than in years past. There are several reasons for this. First, we had originally planned on perhaps doing something along the Gulf Coast this year. However, our mission trip week is scheduled during Mardi Gras week in New Orleans. We have also been carefully watching the political situation in Mexico. You may know that they had a presidential election in the fall that was hotly contested and very close. The installation of the current president took place on December 01 and we wanted to wait and see how this situation affected security in Mexico. As of today, things in Mexico appear to be calm and the United States State Department has not issued any travel advisories for Mexico. We will continue to monitor this situation. Our plans are to leave Friday night, February 16 at 10 p.m. and we will return late in the day on Friday, February 23, 2007. This means that students will miss four days of classes to go on this trip. These days will be counted as school related absences. This year the cost of the trip will be $575.
All Davidson Academy students in grades 9-12 are welcome on this trip. Middle School and elementary students are welcome to participate with a parent. Davidson Academy parents are also encouraged to attend. To sign up for the trip, simply turn in a completed registration packet and a $200 deposit by Thursday, January 18. The remaining balance will paid on two dates in February.
