Meet AJ McGehee

Grade: 12
How long have you been a student at DA?
15 years! I started at DA in their preschool program when I was 3.
What is your favorite thing about DA?
My favorite thing about DA is how close we all are. DA has such a strong family/community feel that is hard to rival.
Which class has been your favorite and why?
My favorite class was Dual Enrollment U.S. History with Ms. Gipson. History at times is just memorizing facts which can be boring but Ms. Gipson makes it so much more than that. She wants us to think deeper and challenge us beyond our comfort zone. The class was also a DE credit which means I earned college credits for it. It was a difficult class but Ms. Gipson made it interesting and fun.
How would you describe the classroom environment at DA?
The classrooms in Davidson strike a perfect balance between engaging in education and having fun at the same time.
What is your favorite DA tradition?
My favorite tradition at DA is Senior Chapel. Even when I was in the lower grades, I always enjoyed witnessing the "passing of the torch". Seniors get to pair up with a Junior and light their candle, signifying that the Juniors are now the leaders of the school. It is a moment that many Upperclassmen treasure beyond their High School years.
What activities are you involved in at DA?
I play Basketball and Tennis, I am the Student Body President, acted in the HS play "Clue" as Prof. Plum, a member of Key Club, Culinary Club, FCA, and Outdoor Club.
Choose a DA activity or team that you listed above and describe your experience and how it has impacted you.
I have played Basketball all 4 of my Highschool years. It has been a great way to grow as a person, teammate, and player. We all want to succeed and win but also have fun while competing. I am looking forward to a great season this year!
Davidson Academy is a God-focused school.  How does that impact life at DA and what does it mean to you?
Having a God-first approach is so meaningful when you are learning about anything in school. Looking at a subject/issue through a Christian perspective allows us as students to be equipped for the real world.
If you are a senior, what are your plans for college and do you know what you want to study?
I am undecided on where I want to go for college but want to study either Business or Finance.
What would you tell someone who was interested in attending Davidson Academy?
You won't regret it! I have been at DA for my entire life, and I have a great mix of friends. Some have been here as long as I have, and some transferred from other schools but both groups agree that DA is a special place.
What has DA taught you about being a leader?
Being a leader is not easy, but it is rewarding to bring a group of people together for a common goal.
What activities do you participate in outside of school?
I am in Youth Group at Long Hollow Baptist Church and I work at Golly G’s Ice Cream.
