  • English I

    English I is a literature-based course designed to foster and enhance thinking and questioning, reading and analyzing literature, and writing in various modes. Using MLA format and a variety of sources, each student completes a research project that includes writing a paper on a career-related topic as well as making a class presentation. Units are organized thematically, and may include: an anchor text, fiction and non-fiction articles, poems, research projects, presentations, group assignments, grammar and conventions review, vocabulary study, and writing prompts. Curricula derives from the HMH textbook, novel studies, and other resources from the instructor. Some of the anchor texts include but are not limited to: Romeo and Juliet, The Odyssey, and Animal Farm.

    English I honors is a literature-based course designed to foster and enhance thinking and questioning, reading and analyzing literature, and writing in various modes. Honors classes will be assigned more challenging texts, additional assignments, and more rigorous tests. Honors students will be expected to analyze and discuss content on a deeper level.

    English II is a literature‑based course that explores a wide variety of world literature and is designed to give students the opportunity to interact with texts across multiple genres and time periods. Reading assignments include novels, short stories, non‑fiction, drama, and poetry, and are designed to strengthen critical reading skills and writing in various modes. In addition to these reading and writing assignments, students will complete an extensive research project based on their personal interests and passions.
  • English II Honors

    Prerequisite: None

    English II Honors is a literature-based course that includes the core objectives of English II while allowing students the opportunity to go deeper into literary analysis through more rigorous assignments and discussions to complement texts read in class. Students will read from a wide selection of texts, including novels, short stories, drama, poetry, and nonfiction. Both reading and writing assignments are designed to strengthen the skills and stamina needed to be successful in both English Literature and Language AP courses.
  • English III

    Prerequisite: None

    English III is a literature‑based course that works to increase students’ knowledge and understanding of American literature and language skills. Students will study American literature (including fiction, nonfiction, prose, and poetry) across its chronological history as the framework for developing this knowledge. Students will practice analyzing these texts through a variety of writing exercises, including journal entries, essays, and one major research project.
  • English Literature AP

    AP English IV/ Literature and Composition is an analytical study of literature. The course requires more in‑depth reading and critical writing than college‑preparatory English III. It is designed to prepare students for the college credit examination offered by the College Board. 
  • English IV

    English IV (CP Lit) is a literature‑based course that works to increase students’ knowledge and understanding of World literature and critical thinking skills. Students will study World literature (including fiction, prose, and poetry) across a history of the framework for developing this knowledge. Students will practice analyzing these texts through a variety of writing exercises, including essays, Socratic Seminars, group projects and rhetorical analysis.
  • English Language AP

    AP English Language and Composition is an Advanced Placement® course that serves as a solid foundation for effective college‑level writing with applications in all subject areas. The course teaches students how to write narrative, expository, analytical, and argumentative essays on a variety of subjects. Students will read historic and contemporary works of fiction and non‑fiction to increase their own awareness of writing styles and techniques, analyzing both written and visual texts for rhetorical effectiveness.  

  • English Comp DE 1020/1080

    This course emphasizes the recursive writing process through appropriate determination of subject, audience, purpose, and style, with correct usage of grammar, punctuation, and logical organization. Students will use appropriate technologies for writing and learning.  Second semester emphasizes intellectual and analytical reasoning through reading and writing assignments. Includes instruction in library and research technologies and the writing of a research project.  Upon successful completion of both semesters, students earn 6 credit hours from Trevecca University for English Composition 1020 and English Composition 1080.
  • Creative Writing

    In this creative writing course, students will explore the art of storytelling through a variety of engaging prompts and writing exercises. From crafting short stories and poetry to experimenting with dialogue, character development, and personal narratives, students will have the opportunity to develop their unique writing voice. This course fosters imagination, self-expression, and writing confidence while providing a supportive environment for peer feedback and revision. Whether you dream of being a novelist, poet, or simply love to write, this class will help you sharpen your skills and bring your ideas to life on the page.

  • Speech Communication DE 1010

    This course is a study of the principles and practices of effective human communication, with emphasis placed on public speaking. The course emphasizes the critical thinking and skill development necessary for effective speech. Listening skills are included in the study.  Admissions criteria, including GPA and standardized test results and admission into Trevecca University must be met for entry into this course.  Students should check eligibility for TSAC Dual Enrollment Grant.  Upon successful completion, students earn 3 credit hours from Trevecca University for Communications 1010.
