Cody Church Named New Head Baseball Coach

Davidson Academy is excited to announce that Cody Church will join the DA family as the new head baseball coach.
Cody played outfield and pitched at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, where he was a team captain of the Railsplitters.

Church’s coaching resume speaks volumes with a priority placed on player development. He has been an assistant baseball coach for two NCAA Division I programs (Presbyterian College and Tennessee Tech University), followed by a successful five-year run as the head baseball coach at Maryville College, where he led the Scots to a 122-79 record (2015-2019 seasons).
Church was named the ‘2016 Division III Coach of the Year in Tennessee’ by the TBCA (Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association). His 2016 recruiting class at Maryville College ranked #1 in the country for Division III by Perfect Game.
“I’m excited that Cody and his family will become part of our family at Davidson Academy very soon,” said Headmaster Terri Simmons. “We are extremely fortunate to add a leader of young men on and off the baseball diamond with Cody’s coaching credentials. His wealth of coaching knowledge and vast experience developing top-notch ball players will serve the DA community well for the growth of our baseball program, while further preparing our students for college, life, and eternity.”
Most recently, he has been active in the travel baseball circuit as a scouting director for the eXposure Baseball program, specifically for eXposure West teams in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition, Church helps with the USA Baseball task force to identify top-tier players at the National Team Championships.
“During this coaching search, one common theme came up every time we spoke to someone about Cody,” said Athletic Director Kevin Harper. “Aside from the high-level coaching experience he will be bringing to our campus, everyone referred to him as a phenomenal person. He knows how to build a winning program, and his emphasis on player development will be a huge asset to our student athletes moving forward.”
Cody currently lives in the Knoxville area with his wife (Lauren) and two sons.
“Our family is ecstatic for the opportunity to join the Davidson Academy community,” said Church. “From my time as a college baseball coach, I knew Davidson had special individuals in their baseball program. After having the opportunity to meet with Mrs. Simmons, Coach Harper, and Mrs. (Sarah Jane) Moore, it became clear that it wasn’t just the athletes, but that DA was full of special people from the top down. I want to thank each of them for entrusting me in this process, and I cannot wait to get to work for the players and community.”
